The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is preparing to bring legal action against Mr. Alkazim Kabir, also known as ‘Abbati Kabiru Abuwa,’ a self-proclaimed journalist operating in Kano State, for his alleged involvement in fraudulent schemes totaling approximately ₦14 million.
According to Demola Bakare, the ICPC’s spokesperson, the decision to prosecute Mr. Kabir came after the Commission received multiple complaints accusing him of repeated deception, misrepresentation, and impersonation of government officials.
ICPC’s inquiry uncovered that the accused had impersonated several public figures, including aides to the president and vice president, as well as lawmakers, to swindle unsuspecting victims.
One notable case involved Mr. Kabir reportedly defrauding two individuals of $3,300 and 1,620 Saudi Riyals by pretending to be a presidential and vice-presidential aide.
Further investigations revealed that Mr. Kabir frequently exploited opportunities linked to international religious pilgrimages to solicit money and goods under false pretenses.
For example, during a pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, he allegedly borrowed 11,000 Saudi Riyals from a fellow traveler and later presented a counterfeit bank receipt as evidence of repayment. Additionally, he is accused of providing a forged transfer receipt for ₦3.2 million to a travel agency responsible for his flight, accommodation, and train arrangements.
Charges have now been formally filed against Mr. Kabir, and he is expected to be brought before a competent court once the case is assigned for trial.
