The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) is partnering with Morocco to enhance the accuracy and scope of weather forecasting and other meteorological services throughout Nigeria.
This collaboration was highlighted following a strategic meeting between NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, and his Moroccan counterpart, Mohammed Dhkissi. The discussion focused on strengthening the existing partnership and exploring new avenues for cooperation in meteorological advancements.
The meeting took place in Casablanca during the United Nations Systematic Observation Financing Facility (SOFF) workshop, which gathers Peer Advisors and Implementing Entities. Central to their talks was the ambition to boost joint efforts in AI-driven weather prediction and early warning systems accessible to all.
Concluding the dialogue, both leaders committed to drafting a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and setting up a collaborative framework to support the establishment of the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) Centre in Abuja, Nigeria.
Additional agreements included the mutual exchange of technical expertise for setting up an instrument calibration centre in Abuja; sharing knowledge and solutions related to data management and Information and Communication Technology (ICT); collaborative training programs for instructors fluent in both French and English to broaden educational outreach; exchanging insights on NiMet’s Agricultural Meteorology model and its stakeholder engagement strategies; learning from NiMet’s experience with SOFF Peer Advisory Services; and cooperation in Numerical Weather Prediction alongside the integration of Artificial Intelligence in weather modelling.
Both agencies recognized their already strong partnership, which has involved Morocco aiding Nigeria with meteorological data sharing, participation in NiMet’s Stakeholders’ Engagement Forum, and Nigeria’s involvement in ClimAfrica events hosted by Morocco. They pledged to maintain and deepen this relationship through active participation in upcoming initiatives, including joint efforts focused on climate resilience funding and sustainable development for both organisations.
