The House of Representatives has decided to conduct a thorough investigation into the budget execution, Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and virement activities of the National Examination Council (NECO) covering the years 2023 through 2025.
This decision followed the unanimous approval of a motion highlighting urgent public concern, presented by Hon. Amobi Ogah (LP, Abia) during Thursday’s plenary session.
During the discussion, Hon. Ogah emphasized that as a government agency responsible for generating IGR, NECO must maintain transparency and accountability to the Nigerian public.
He further stressed that for NECO to fulfill its duties effectively, the National Assembly or its designated committee should be granted full access to the council’s budget details, IGR performance, and implementation records from 2023 onward.
Additionally, Ogah insisted that the legislature must review NECO’s bank statements from 2023 to the present, and the examination body should provide proof of all remittances made to the federation account within the same timeframe.
He raised concerns over reports suggesting that NECO might be executing virements without obtaining the necessary legislative consent, warning that such actions would constitute a serious breach of the constitution and undermine the House’s constitutional authority.
