Ademola Lookman, the current African Player of the Year and winger for Atalanta, will miss Nigeria’s upcoming World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic scheduled for Tuesday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Lookman was shown his second yellow card in consecutive matches during Nigeria’s 2-1 triumph over Lesotho in Polokwane, South Africa, last Friday. Having already been cautioned on September 9 in a 1-1 draw with South Africa in Bloemfontein, this second booking results in an automatic suspension for the pivotal clash with Benin.
The Super Eagles moved closer to securing their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with their hard-fought victory against Lesotho. Troost-Ekong opened the scoring in the 55th minute by calmly converting a penalty awarded after a handball in the Lesotho box. Later, substitute Akor Adams extended Nigeria’s lead with a precise finish in the 80th minute. Although Lesotho pulled one back through Kalake in the 83rd minute, Nigeria managed to hold on and claim the crucial three points.
Despite this win, Nigeria remains third in Group C, as Benin Republic secured an away victory over Rwanda. With only one match remaining in the group stage, Nigeria’s qualification hopes are not fully under their control.
Enhancing their goal difference has become a vital objective. Currently trailing both Benin and South Africa, Nigeria must focus on scoring more goals while keeping a clean sheet in their final game, as goal difference could ultimately determine which team advances if points are tied.
