The Nigeria Association of the Blind in Taraba State has reached out to Governor Agbu Kefas, seeking his immediate support and active involvement in the forthcoming 2025 International White Cane Day festivities.
In a formal appeal signed by the state chairman, Wanderimam Teyang, the organization requested that the governor authorize funding for the twoday-culture-music-whiskey/” title=”Lagos, Brace Yourself: Jameson Distillery on Tour is Back with a 5-… Celebration of Culture, Music & Whiskey!”>-day celebration and personally participate, emphasizing that his presence would symbolize government endorsement and promote inclusivity.
Set for October 15 and 16, this annual observance honors the perseverance and accomplishments of individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
Planned activities include a meaningful procession from the Ministry of Works to the Government House on the opening day, followed by a major celebratory event on the second day, according to information obtained by LEADERSHIP Sunday.
“We earnestly invite Your Excellency to keep our event in mind and to honor us with your attendance,” the letter appealed.
“Your participation would greatly uplift our members’ spirits and demonstrate a strong commitment to inclusivity and empathy for all persons living with disabilities within the state,” it added.
While recognizing Governor Kefas’s reputation as a disability-friendly leader, the association expressed concern that he has yet to engage with their group or attend any of their events.
“We trust in your dedication to enhancing the welfare of the blind and visually impaired community,” the statement affirmed.
Additionally, the association called for the prompt release of funds requested via a memo from the Ministry of Social Justice and Reintegration, which are essential for organizing the event.
International White Cane Day, observed worldwide on October 15, serves to highlight the independence, mobility, and rights of people with visual impairments.
The association remains hopeful that Taraba State will take a proactive role in this year’s commemoration.
