FCT Town Planners Kick Against ‘Distortion Of Abuja Master Plan’, Seek Wike’s Audience

FCT Town Planners Challenge ‘Distortion of Abuja Master Plan’ and Urgently Seek Meeting with Wike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) has urged a reinstatement of the original Abuja Master Plan, attributing the current urban challenges in the capital to unauthorized constructions, obstructed drainage systems, and land allocations made without expert input.

This appeal was made during a joint celebration of World Habitat Day and World Cities Day, held at Abuja’s Old Parade Ground on Saturday.

Under the global theme of ‘Urban October 2025,’ the event featured a friendly football match between Team Young Town Planners and Team Youth Assembly of Nigeria, symbolizing collaboration between professionals and youth.

In her opening remarks, FCT NITP Chairperson, Tpl. Queen Phillips, underscored the relevance of the 2025 themes: ‘Urban Crisis Response’ for World Habitat Day and ‘People-Centred Smart Cities’ for World Cities Day.

“Our urban centers face mounting pressures from rapid population increases, insufficient infrastructure, informal housing, climate impacts, and land use conflicts,” she explained.

She highlighted that these issues are evident in the FCT through unchecked urban expansion, residential developments in flood-prone locations, the rise of informal settlements, and waste disposal difficulties.

Phillips stressed that truly ‘smart cities’ must prioritize people, stating, “Technology should empower communities rather than exclude them.”

In a post-event interview, she pinpointed specific flood-vulnerable neighborhoods such as Asokoro, Guzape, and Trademore, linking these problems to neglect of established planning frameworks.

“The FCT’s master plan was meticulously designed. Our professional plea is simple: can we adhere to the zoning regulations?

“If modifications are necessary, can we consult the original planners and relevant bodies for guidance?” she asked.

She also revealed a systemic issue where professional planning organizations are frequently bypassed in decision-making.

“Who is accountable? Who faces consequences? Often, developments proceed without our input or direction. We are sidelined,” she lamented.

To tackle this, the Institute has formally requested a meeting with the FCT Minister, Barr. Nyesom Wike.

“We have reached out to the Minister, who shares our vision of restoring the initial FCT Master Plan. As town planners, we are eager to collaborate and convey our expert recommendations,” Phillips said.

“We commend the Minister’s infrastructure projects and road constructions, which are commendable. However, these efforts must be supported by proper urban planning to prevent flooding and displacement, which could undermine progress.

“Our goal is to engage with him soon, offering professional advice that complements his initiatives and ensures sustainable development,” she added.

Reinforcing this perspective, former National President of NITP, Tpl. Nathaniel Atebije, issued a grave caution about the dangers of neglecting urban planning.

“Planning is essential for maintaining order. Human settlements worldwide are facing a crisis due to disorderly growth.

“It is imperative that everyone embraces planning; failure to do so threatens our survival. We must urgently address this crisis to create cities that are both livable and sustainable,” he warned.

The gathering concluded with the symbolic football match, representing a partnership between urban planning professionals and youth organizations. Tpl. Phillips officially opened the game, expressing hope that this collaboration would spark “meaningful reflection and proactive solutions” to the FCT’s urban difficulties.
