Comrade Abiodun Aremu, a distinguished labour activist aged 65, tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run incident in Ota, Ogun State.

As the Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), a coalition representing pro-labour civil society groups, Aremu was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near his home in Ota around 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 12.

Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital where medical staff attempted resuscitation using oxygen support; however, he was ultimately pronounced dead.

Originally, the burial was planned for Monday, October 13. Nevertheless, the family, in collaboration with the Labour Movement, decided to postpone the funeral to October 23. This adjustment allows the labour community to organize a fitting tribute to honor his legacy.

In an official statement representing the Nigeria Labour Movement, Owei Lakemfa-former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) and ex-Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)-noted: “The Aremu family and the Labour Movement have agreed to reschedule the interment of our esteemed leader, Comrade Abiodun ‘Aremson’ Aremu, by approximately two weeks to facilitate adequate mobilization and attendance.”

He was an unparalleled champion of Nigeria’s working class, instrumental in establishing lasting frameworks for cooperation and advancement within the labour movement, such as the Labour-Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) and the Kolagbodi Memorial Foundation.”

“Additionally, Comrade Aremu founded the Amilcar Cabral Ideological School (ACIS-M), dedicated to educating youth, equipping them with practical revolutionary skills, and fostering their growth into committed activists capable of transforming society.”

“His activism extended internationally, serving as Secretary for both the Nigeria Movement for the Liberation of Western Sahara and the Nigerian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba.”

“In recognition of his outstanding internationalist contributions, he was honored with the Friendship Medal by the Cuban government.”

“The most fitting tribute to our fearless mentor and leader is to carry forward his mission by building a world grounded in social justice.”
