In Kano metropolis’s Nasarawa district, the Kano State Hisbah Board detained a young couple along with five others for conducting a wedding ceremony without obtaining parental approval or adhering to Islamic marital protocols.
The individuals taken into custody include the groom, Aminu, 23 years old, and his bride, Sadiya, aged 22. Also arrested were Umar, 24, who represented the groom; Abubakar, 23, acting as the bride’s guardian; Usaina, 21; and two additional women who served as witnesses during the ceremony.
Reports indicate that the marriage was formalized with a bride price of ₦10,000, bypassing the consent of both families involved.
Deputy Commander-General of the Hisbah Board, Dr. Mujaheeddeen Aminuddeen, confirmed the arrests, noting that the intervention followed complaints from local residents concerned about the unauthorized union.
He emphasized that the suspects’ actions contravened both Islamic principles and Kano State’s matrimonial laws, underscoring the Hisbah Board’s commitment to enforcing religious and legal standards related to marriage.
Dr. Aminuddeen further stated that the detainees remain in Hisbah custody as investigations continue.
