Sylent Nqo: Bridging Zimbabwean Beats with Africa’s Top Artists to Revolutionize Afro-Fusion
Occasionally, a musician emerges whose sound captivates and resonates deeply. Sylent Nqo, a gifted guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter of Zimbabwean and Mozambican heritage, is one such artist making a profound impact across Africa’s music scene.
Raised in Harare by a Mozambican mother, Sylent’s early life was steeped in music. His parents gifted him a guitar and a marimba during childhood, unknowingly igniting a lifelong passion that would carry him far beyond his hometown. Today, he is affectionately known as “The Guitar Sangoma,” a title that reflects the almost mystical, healing energy his performances evoke.
“My inspiration comes from a diverse palette,” Sylent explains. “I blend traditional African beats with modern pop and electronic elements. Ultimately, my goal is to create authentic music that resonates with people from all backgrounds.”

This ethos permeates his artistry. His 2022 debut album, Sylent Treatment, unveiled a unique fusion of Afro-fusion, alternative sounds, and electric soul-music that gracefully oscillates between jubilant celebration and reflective depth, all while honoring its African roots.
Even before releasing his album, Sylent had already gained international acclaim. In 2016, he made history as the first African to win the “Senior Solo Instrumental Grand Champion of the World” at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood-a proud moment for both Zimbabwe and Mozambique. His recognition continued in 2019 when he earned the Best Alternative Musician award at the Zimbabwe Music Awards, cementing his status as one of the nation’s most promising artists.

The true essence of Sylent’s craft shines brightest during his live shows. Alongside his band, The Noise Makers, he has shared stages with legends like UB40, Oliver Mtukudzi, Hugh Masekela, and Chiwoniso Maraire, performing in diverse locations from Norway and Italy to Egypt, South Africa, and Australia. Reflecting on these moments, Sylent recalls, “Opening for UB40 and meeting Bra Hugh were unforgettable. Bra Hugh spoke passionately about African liberation and the artist’s role in narrating our stories-words that continue to inspire me.”
Despite his global reach, Sylent’s music remains firmly rooted in African culture. His collaborations span the continent’s biggest names, including Nigeria’s Davido and Mr Eazi, Zimbabwe’s Jah Prayzah, Ghana’s Shatta Wale, and South Africa’s DJ Cleo. These partnerships showcase his adaptability as a guitarist and composer, seamlessly merging diverse genres while honoring his heritage.
“I resist being confined to one genre,” Sylent shares. “My sound is African at its core but borrows freely from soul, rock, pop, and electronic music. I want my music to be vibrant and inclusive.”
Earlier this year, Sylent Nqo inked a deal with Bridgenorth Music, a record label based in Harare. This collaboration signals an exciting new phase in his evolving career. As he prepares to release fresh material, fans can anticipate a compelling collection that explores themes of unity, healing, and the transformative essence of art.
With upcoming projects and live performances scheduled across Africa, Sylent is confidently stepping into the continental limelight. Audience members often describe his concerts as life-affirming experiences. “My shows celebrate life,” he says. “They foster a deep connection where rhythm and emotion intertwine. Everyone is invited to share in the joy, love, and a reminder of our shared humanity.” Sylent Nqo is poised to carry Zimbabwe’s vibrant rhythm to every corner of Africa.
