The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has put forward the emirs of Bade and Machina for its prestigious National Meritorious Service Award, honoring their remarkable efforts in advancing sports within their regions.
This nomination was officially communicated through a letter signed by SWAN’s president, Mr. Isaiah Benjamin, and secretary general, Ambassador Ikenan Okonkwo, which was shared with LEADERSHIP in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State.
In the correspondence, SWAN praised the emirs for their unwavering commitment, exemplary service, and significant impact on the promotion and development of sports both within Yobe State and on a broader scale.
Specifically, the letter acknowledged Mai Abubakar Umar Suleiman II, the emir of Bade, for his active involvement in badminton-organizing and sponsoring tournaments at various levels, from local to international. His efforts have led to numerous championship victories, alongside providing financial support to the association and its members. Additionally, his extensive travels as the patron of the Yobe SWAN Chapter were highlighted as a testament to his dedication.
Similarly, the emir of Machina was recognized for his role in preserving and promoting indigenous sports such as Langa, Kokuwa, and Dambe. His passion for equestrian activities, including horse riding exhibitions and participation in high-profile events, has helped elevate these traditional sports on local, state, national, and international platforms.
The distinguished National Meritorious Service Award from SWAN will be officially bestowed upon the emirs during the association’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration (SWAN @60), scheduled to take place in Abuja from October 29 to 31, 2025.
