MultiChoice’s new owner Canal+ to develop super app to unify DStv, Netflix, and more

Canal+ to Revolutionize Streaming: Launching a Super App Uniting DStv, Netflix, and More!

Canal+, the new proprietor of MultiChoice, is in the process of creating an all-encompassing “super app” designed to merge the content libraries of DStv and Canal+. This innovative platform is expected to also offer seamless access to leading third-party streaming services such as Netflix, Apple TV+, HBO Max, and Paramount+.

Following a strategic restructuring to comply with South African regulatory standards, Canal+ successfully completed its acquisition of MultiChoice.

With a cash offer of R125 ($7) per share, which was embraced by over 90% of MultiChoice shareholders, Canal+ has increased its ownership from 46% to an overwhelming 94.36%, effectively gaining near-complete control. The company plans to invoke section 124(1) of the Companies Act to acquire the remaining shares.

Maxime Saada, CEO of Canal+

The combined entity now serves over 40 million subscribers across 70 countries, with a dominant footprint in Africa, covering 40 nations on the continent, positioning it as one of the largest entertainment providers in the region.

A Single Platform for All Entertainment

Maxime Saada, Canal+’s CEO, has emphasized the company’s commitment to streamlining user experience by simplifying access to its diverse content portfolio.

“Our aim is to offer subscribers a smooth and enjoyable way to explore a vast array of content from global creators, alongside local sports and entertainment,” Saada explained.

He further revealed that the ultimate vision is to consolidate all offerings from Canal+ and DStv into one comprehensive super app.

Currently, Canal+ and MultiChoice maintain separate streaming services: Canal+ caters to French-speaking audiences, while MultiChoice operates DStv Stream and Showmax across Africa. The company is exploring the possibility of merging these platforms into a single, cohesive brand.

By integrating its proprietary content with external streaming giants like Apple TV+, HBO Max, Netflix, and Paramount+, Canal+ aims to provide bundled subscription options, enhancing value for customers in select markets.

This unified application would not only simplify content discovery and subscription management but also serve as a centralized hub for both African and international entertainment.

The branding of this super app remains undecided-it could retain the DStv or Canal+ name, or adopt an entirely new identity. Notably, Canal+ does not currently operate in South Africa but competes with DStv in other African territories.

Showmax’s Path Forward

A significant point of interest is the future direction of Showmax, MultiChoice’s streaming platform, which was revitalized in 2024 through a partnership with NBCUniversal, where MultiChoice holds a 70% stake and NBCUniversal 30%.

The relaunch, supported by a R4 billion ($231.36 million) investment from MultiChoice, introduced a platform powered by Peacock’s streaming technology, delivering superior video quality and a richer content library, which has significantly enhanced user engagement and subscription growth.

According to entertainment analytics firm Fabric, Showmax has risen to become Africa’s third most popular streaming service, trailing only Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Despite these achievements, Canal+ intends to thoroughly evaluate the Showmax partnership. Saada noted the need to fully understand the financial and operational details before making any strategic decisions.

“While we are aware of the public aspects of Showmax, the specifics of the deal, including economics and investments, require deeper insight,” Saada stated. “We anticipate reaching a conclusion within the coming weeks or months.”

This ongoing review means Showmax’s role in Canal+’s streaming ecosystem remains uncertain. Although Saada previously indicated no immediate plans to discontinue the Showmax brand, the evaluation could lead to adjustments in its operation or content distribution strategy.

Should Canal+ opt to phase out Showmax, much of its local content could be absorbed into the forthcoming super app, especially since a majority of this programming already airs on DStv channels, facilitating a smooth transition.

Transforming Africa’s Streaming Landscape

The launch of a combined Canal+/DStv super app could represent a transformative moment in Africa’s pay-TV and streaming sectors.

For millions across Africa, this development promises a more streamlined and centralized way to enjoy a wide range of entertainment-from live Premier League football to popular Netflix series-without the hassle of juggling multiple apps and subscriptions.

This merger bolsters Canal+’s competitive edge against global streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon by offering a unified platform that enhances subscriber convenience, expands content variety, and emphasizes locally relevant programming, thereby boosting customer loyalty.

However, this integration also raises important questions about pricing strategies, data privacy, and the prominence of indigenous content. Showmax’s substantial investment in African original productions, for instance, highlights concerns about the future support and visibility of such projects under Canal+’s stewardship.
