Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has issued a stern warning to his newly appointed commissioners that they will be barred from attending the state’s Executive Council Meetings in they failed to wear the ‘Asiwaju Cap’ made popular by President Bola Tinubu.
Okpebholo who gave the warning while swearing in 20 newly appointed commissioners and members of various boards at the Government House in Benin on Tuesday, said wearing of the Tinubu-styled cap was a mark of loyalty to the President as they would not be where they are without the president’s support.
In a video footage that captured the moment he gave the instructions, Okpebholo is heard saying:
“Before we begin, let me say this could not have happened without a responsible President. We’ve had many elections here, and our major problem was that the President wasn’t with us.
“You see this cap I’m wearing? I will not forgive any commissioner who isn’t wearing it. If you come to the Exco in traditional attire without this Asiwaju cap, you’re going back,” he warned.
The instruction has however, elicited different reactions from Nigerians with many commending Okpebholo for showing loyalty to Tinubu while others say he has taken sycophancy and ‘eye service’ to another level.
Social media users were also generous in their criticism of the governor with many saying he has reduced the governance of the state to a cult-like form of hero-worshipping.
