Authorities in Ohio have formally charged a 9-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl with attempted murder and rape following a brutal assault on a 5-year-old girl in Cleveland. The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office announced that the two minors face multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, rape, felonious assault, kidnapping, and strangulation, related to the incident that occurred in September. These charges were filed in juvenile court, as reported by local news sources.
On Wednesday, October 15, the prosecutor’s office revealed that the investigation is ongoing, with evidence still being gathered. Lexi Bauer, spokesperson for the office, confirmed that the accused children will be arraigned at a later date. She also clarified that under Ohio law, juvenile cases can only be moved to adult court if the suspect is 14 years or older, which does not apply in this situation. Due to the delicate nature of the case, officials have withheld further details to protect those involved.
The victim’s mother shared harrowing details with WOIO, describing how her daughter was viciously attacked on September 13 in a field near East 148th Street and St. Clair Avenue. She recounted that her child was severely beaten and “scalped,” leaving her almost unrecognizable. Antavia Kennibrew explained that she had dropped her daughter off at a relative’s home earlier that day, but the young girl somehow left the house and was assaulted by a group of children outside.
Upon learning of the attack, Kennibrew rushed to the scene and found emergency responders attending to her daughter several blocks away. “What I witnessed was unimaginable,” she told WOIO.

Kennibrew described her daughter’s condition as devastating: “She looked nothing like my child. Her hair was ripped from her scalp. She was covered in bruises and blood. Her eyes were bloodshot, and her mouth and lips were bleeding. Dirt and debris were lodged under her fingernails.”
The Cleveland Police Department is actively investigating the case. In a statement posted on Facebook on October 7, the department emphasized that they are withholding additional information to maintain the integrity of the investigation and to safeguard the privacy and legal rights of everyone involved.
