The Niger State Chapter of the Nigeria Association for the Blind (NAB) has called for the establishment of a dedicated Commission for Persons with Physical Disabilities within the state.
Hamza Salihu, the association’s chairman, voiced this appeal during an interview with LEADERSHIP in Minna yesterday, highlighting the challenges faced by visually impaired individuals and emphasizing the need for greater inclusivity.
He pointed out that while several northern states have enacted laws to create commissions supporting physically challenged persons, Niger State has yet to follow suit by instituting such a body.
Speaking in the context of the recent International White Cane Day, Salihu championed the rights and respect of people living with visual impairments.
He explained that the formation of a commission dedicated to the physically challenged would enhance access to quality education, vocational skills training, and job opportunities tailored to their needs.
“We urge the Niger State government to establish this commission to safeguard our interests. Additionally, development agencies and private sector stakeholders should collaborate to improve the welfare and livelihoods of visually impaired individuals throughout the state,” he appealed.
Salihu further stressed that receiving structured support from the government is far more empowering than relying on charity, enabling visually impaired persons to flourish, contribute productively to society, and achieve self-reliance.
