Frenkie de Jong, the talented midfielder for Barcelona, has committed his future to the club by signing a contract extension that will keep him at Camp Nou until 2029. Since his arrival from Ajax in 2019, the Dutch playmaker has established himself as an indispensable element in Barcelona’s midfield lineup. De Jong is determined to help the team secure trophies as he continues to chase the dream he has held since childhood.
According to the club, “Barcelona firmly believes that De Jong’s skill set and experience make him a cornerstone of the current sporting vision.”
Although De Jong has experienced fluctuations in form, he emerged as a vital presence in the midfield last season under the guidance of coach Hansi Flick, forming a strong partnership with Pedri Gonzalez.
Speaking at a press event, De Jong shared, “Playing for Barcelona was always my dream, and now that I’m living it, I want to keep striving for success here for many years ahead and aim to win major trophies.”
De Jong joined Barcelona during the tenure of former president Josep Maria Bartomeu and is among the club’s top earners. It has been reported that he agreed to a salary reduction in his new contract, which will come into effect starting with the 2026/27 campaign.
The midfielder addressed rumors about his wages, stating that media coverage has often exaggerated the figures, which has influenced public perception.
“I prefer not to reveal my exact salary; there’s been a lot of speculation, but I believe the numbers reported about my previous earnings have been blown out of proportion,” De Jong explained. “This has shaped how some fans see me because when newspapers claim I’m the highest-paid player in Europe, it naturally affects opinions.”
In 2022, Barcelona explored the possibility of transferring De Jong as part of financial restructuring efforts, yet the player remained resolute in his commitment to the club, where he has now surpassed 250 appearances.
“I don’t feel undervalued by my teammates, coaches, or the club itself; that’s more a narrative created by the media,” De Jong added. “That’s the nature of football-everyone is entitled to their own viewpoint.”
