A devastating accident unfolded in Onitsha, the bustling commercial center of Anambra State, when a container from a trailer crushed two individuals riding a tricycle along Owerri-Onitsha Road, leaving four others injured.
The mishap, which took place around 8:20 a.m. yesterday, involved a red tricycle and a trailer. According to eyewitness accounts obtained by LEADERSHIP Friday, four adult men were caught up in the collision.
Witnesses attributed the cause of the accident to a deteriorated stretch of the road, which led to the container detaching from the trailer and falling onto the tricycle.
Margaret Onabe, the Public Education Officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State, confirmed the unfortunate event to LEADERSHIP Friday.
She explained that once the emergency call was received, the FRSC rescue team promptly arrived at the scene, coordinating with local police to secure the area and manage traffic flow effectively.
Tragically, the victims trapped beneath the trailer were rushed to a nearby hospital but were declared dead upon arrival.
Onabe detailed, “The tricycle involved was red and lacked a registration plate, while the trailer also had no visible registration or identifying marks.”
She added that the FRSC team efficiently removed the debris, allowing normal traffic movement to resume.
Furthermore, Corps Commander Bridget Asekhauno, who leads the Anambra State FRSC Command, expressed profound sorrow over the incident. She stated, “The FRSC mourns the loss of lives in this heartbreaking accident. We call on all motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant and comply with traffic regulations to avoid such tragedies. Our response team acted swiftly, and we are committed to enforcing measures that will help prevent similar accidents in the future.”
