Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, has firmly stated that he will not be a candidate in the 2027 presidential election. Addressing recent rumors on Friday, Wike dismissed claims that a faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is urging him to vie for the presidency as baseless and misleading.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, Wike’s allegiance remains unwaveringly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, affirming, “For Wike, it is President Tinubu’s leadership until 2031.” The statement criticized those spreading such false narratives as lacking constructive ideas and resorting to petty tactics.
Olayinka elaborated that the only gathering involving PDP leaders on August 20, 2025, was a meeting of Southern Nigerian party stakeholders. This meeting was convened to prepare for a subsequent session in Lagos on August 21, 2025, aimed at endorsing the zoning of party positions to the South. The outcomes were publicly shared through a press release titled “Re: Purported Meeting Of PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit,” signed by prominent party officials including state chairpersons from Imo, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers, as well as national and legislative leaders.
The spokesperson emphasized that the names cited in the misleading reports were directly taken from this official press release, which had been widely disseminated across major newspapers and broadcast on national television. He underscored that Wike’s transparent and straightforward character is well-known, and he does not engage in covert political maneuvers.
Wike has made it clear that his political focus is on supporting President Tinubu’s administration through to 2031. He remains committed to advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda within the Federal Capital Territory, striving to transform Abuja into a world-class capital city with modern infrastructure that rivals global counterparts.
In summary, Wike’s position is resolute: he will not pursue the presidency in 2027 but will continue to back President Tinubu’s vision and leadership, dedicating his efforts to the development and progress of the FCT.
