The governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, alongside the human rights group Journalists for Defence of Human Rights (JDHR), have strongly denounced the recent killings of two young men within the state.
Governor Oborevwori expressed his outrage over the death of Jerry Aduara, a native of Okere-Urhobo Kingdom, who served twice as chairman of the Odion Urhobo Youth Council and was a member of the Warri South Local Government Peace Committee. Meanwhile, JDHR condemned the fatal shooting of Oghenekaro Bonny, who was fatally attacked while visiting a friend at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Otokutu, Ughelli South Local Government Area.
During a visit to the Delta State DSS Command, the governor ordered security agencies to thoroughly investigate the killing. He stated, “I have instructed law enforcement to apprehend the individual responsible for the shooting in Warri. Those involved, including any accomplices, will face justice. No one will escape accountability because Delta State prioritizes peace.”
JDHR has also called for a comprehensive and transparent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Bonny’s death.
This appeal was made in a joint statement by JDHR chairman Comrade Michael Ikeogwu and secretary Okakuro Akpokona Omafuaire.
Eyewitnesses reported that on October 12, 2025, at Plantation City Estate near Otokutu Community in Ughelli South LGA, a soldier and his colleagues confronted Ugo during a dispute over whether he had authorization to enter the estate. The disagreement escalated, culminating in the soldier stabbing Ugo, who later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Human rights advocates have urged the Delta State Police Command and the Chief of Army Staff to intervene promptly and ensure those accountable face justice.
In response, the military issued a statement claiming the soldier acted in self-defense. They alleged that Ugochukwu Oghenekaro, identified as part of a group attempting to force entry into the DMLT Estate without clearance, became aggressive and engaged in a physical confrontation. The soldier, while on duty, reportedly tried to stop the group, which led to the tragic incident.
However, the deceased’s family disputes the military’s version, insisting that Ugo was merely visiting a friend and was not involved in any unlawful activity. They further claim that the Army’s account contradicts eyewitness testimonies and that they have been excluded from the police-arrested-for-assault-over-n1m-bribe-refusal/” title=”… Operatives Arrested for Brutally Assaulting Man Who Refused to Pay N1 Million Bribe”>investigation process. Crucial evidence, including statements from Ugo’s brothers and medical documentation, has allegedly been overlooked.
JDHR has rejected the self-defense justification, citing a lack of credible proof, and insists on a meticulous investigation before any conclusions are drawn.
The organization demands an independent and exhaustive review of all evidence, including autopsy findings, witness statements, and any available surveillance footage.
JDHR also called for the immediate suspension of the soldier involved pending the outcome of the investigation and urged both the Army and police to conduct the inquiry with full transparency to restore public confidence.
