Authorities have uncovered human remains buried in a shallow grave behind a middle school, which are suspected to be those of a missing Philadelphia beauty queen.
Kada Scott, aged 23, was last spotted on the evening of October 4, departing from her workplace at an assisted living center in Chestnut Hill, around 9:30 p.m.
Her disappearance raised alarms after her vehicle was found abandoned at her workplace and her phone ceased to connect.
Nearly two weeks following her vanishing, law enforcement officials now believe the remains found correspond to the Penn State alumna.
John Stanford, a spokesperson for the Philadelphia Police Department’s FDC, described the discovery as “a solemn yet thankful moment,” commending the community for their valuable tips.
On the evening of Friday, October 17, police acted on a “highly detailed” lead that directed them to a densely forested location where the remains were uncovered.
Volunteers assisting in the search recounted unearthing freshly disturbed soil beneath a wooden plank, where maggots were present, accompanied by a distinct odor emanating from the site.
The middle school where the remains were found is situated approximately two and a half miles from Scott’s workplace.
Earlier, two days before the discovery, another tip had led officers to the same school grounds, where they located a 1999 Toyota Camry containing several of Scott’s personal items, including her debit card and phone case.
The vehicle was registered to Keon King, 21, who has since been arrested and charged with kidnapping and reckless endangerment related to Scott’s disappearance.
Stanford further expressed, “This is a profoundly tragic development, and our hearts go out to Kada’s family and friends during this incredibly challenging period. The Philadelphia Police Department remains dedicated to uncovering the facts and ensuring justice is achieved.”
Official confirmation of the remains will be conducted by the medical examiner’s office.
Kenyatta Johnson, Council President representing the second Council District, shared his reaction on Instagram following the grim discovery.
He stated, “I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the tragic finding believed to be the remains of 23-year-old Kada Scott. This heartbreaking conclusion ends a two-week search that captivated our city and shattered the hopes of all who wished for her safe return.”
“My sincerest sympathies are with Kada’s family, friends, and loved ones during this unimaginably painful time.”
“Kada was a young woman with a promising future-a Penn State graduate embarking on a career in caregiving. Her disappearance and the terrible circumstances surrounding her death highlight the urgent need to enhance protections for women against violence and to prevent those with histories of abuse from causing further harm.”
“As a community, we must renew our commitment to safeguarding women, demanding accountability, and fostering a justice system that truly protects the vulnerable. Securing justice for Kada Scott-and for every woman affected by violence-must remain a paramount priority.”
