Key thoroughfares in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, have been closed off as the #FreeNnamdiKanu demonstration, initiated by Sahara Reporters’ publisher Omoyele Sowore, commences on Monday. The protest demands the liberation of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Coinciding with the fifth anniversary of the nationwide #ENDSARS movement, the city’s main roads are heavily guarded by security forces aiming to maintain public order and prevent unrest.
Despite official advisories from the Nigerian Police urging the protest organizers to call off the event, numerous demonstrators have assembled across prominent locations within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), holding signs and calling for Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release.
