The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations is set to commence this December, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Nathan Tella has issued a determined message to his fellow Super Eagles players.
Nathan Tella Sets Sights on 2025 AFCON Selection
Nathan Tella, the dynamic winger for Bayer Leverkusen, has openly declared his ambition to secure a spot in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, according to reports from Soccernet.ng.
From Debut to Determination: Tella’s Journey with the Super Eagles
After transferring from Burnley to Bayer Leverkusen in early 2023, Tella earned his first call-up to the Nigerian national team the same year. He made his international debut during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe in November 2023. Despite this breakthrough, he was not included in the squad for the 2023 AFCON tournament, which was held in early 2024. Under coach Jose Peseiro, Nigeria reached the final but ultimately fell short against hosts Côte d’Ivoire.
It wasn’t until June 2025, during the Unity Cup, that Tella earned his second cap for Nigeria. His consistent performances at club level have positioned him as a strong candidate for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers scheduled for September.
Motivation Fueled by Missed Opportunity
Reflecting on his absence from the 2023 AFCON squad, Tella expressed his disappointment but emphasized his resolve to work harder. In a recent interview, he revealed that witnessing his teammates’ impressive run to the final inspired him to elevate his game and secure a place in the 2025 AFCON team, which will be hosted in Morocco this December.

“Missing out on last year’s AFCON was tough, especially seeing how well the team performed and how close they came to lifting the trophy,” Tella shared with The Olympics.
“Watching my teammates proudly represent Nigeria motivated me even more. To earn a spot, I must prove myself at the club level and push my limits because wearing the Nigerian jersey isn’t a given-it’s something you fight for.”
“Once you make it, the challenge is to maintain your place. There’s no greater honor than representing your country.”
Assessing Tella’s Prospects for the 2025 AFCON Squad
Looking ahead, Nathan Tella appears well-positioned to be included in Nigeria’s 2025 AFCON roster. The national team currently lacks a wealth of wingers performing consistently at elite European clubs, which could work in Tella’s favor.

Veteran wingers such as Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, and Ademola Lookman have been mainstays, but only Lookman has consistently impressed in recent times. Both Simon and Chukwueze have struggled with form and consistency, opening the door for emerging talents like Tella to stake their claim.
With Bayer Leverkusen expected to utilize Tella extensively on the flanks this season, he has a prime opportunity to showcase his skills and cement his reputation. His ability to deliver in high-pressure matches will be crucial in convincing national team coach Eric Chelle to include him in the final squad for Morocco.
