The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially called off its twoasuu-issues-two-week-strike-deadline-nigeria/” title=”… Sets Two-Week Ultimatum to Nigerian …, Threatens Nationwide …”>-week warning strike, which commenced on October 13, 2025.
This decision to halt the strike, originally set to conclude next Monday, comes after the Federal Government renewed its pledges to tackle the critical concerns raised by the union.
ASUU initiated the industrial action following the lapse of a previous 14-day ultimatum given to the government, citing ongoing “neglect and lack of genuine commitment” in addressing the longstanding issues outlined in the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.
The union’s key demands include the payment of withheld salaries, arrears on promotions, earned academic allowances (EAA), the release of third-party deductions, and funding for the revitalization of public universities.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, ASUU’s National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, revealed that the strike suspension was decided during the union’s executive council meeting, which concluded in the early hours of the day.
He emphasized that the strike could have been avoided entirely if the government had engaged sincerely in negotiations from the beginning.
Professor Piwuna also praised the Senate’s intervention, which played a crucial role in enabling the union to consider suspending the strike.
“The National Executive Council has resolved to suspend the warning strike with immediate effect,” he stated.
“However, if the government fails to resolve the issues within the next month, ASUU reserves the right to reinstate the strike action,” Piwuna warned.
