PECAN Reaffirms Commitment to Eradicate Malaria Across Nigeria

By Fabian Ekeruche

In a decisive move to combat one of Nigeria’s most persistent health challenges, the Pest Control Association of Nigeria (PECAN) has reiterated its dedication to achieving a malaria-free nation. This pledge coincides with Nigeria’s participation in the global observance of World Mosquito Day 2025, a day that highlights the ongoing battle against mosquito-borne diseases.

According to a statement issued by Dr. Dennis Olabisi, PECAN’s National Public Relations Officer, the association is intensifying efforts to reduce malaria incidence through innovative pest management strategies and community engagement. Malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death in Nigeria, accounting for approximately 27% of outpatient visits and contributing to over 100,000 deaths annually, predominantly among children under five.

PECAN’s approach integrates modern vector control techniques, including the deployment of insecticide-treated nets, indoor residual spraying, and environmental management to eliminate mosquito breeding sites. The association also emphasizes the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate communities on preventive measures and early treatment.

Highlighting recent successes, PECAN has collaborated with local governments and health agencies to implement targeted interventions in high-risk regions, resulting in a measurable decline in malaria cases in pilot areas. These efforts align with Nigeria’s National Malaria Strategic Plan, which aims to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality by 75% by 2027.

As the global health community intensifies its fight against malaria, PECAN’s renewed commitment underscores the critical role of coordinated pest control initiatives in safeguarding public health. The association calls on all stakeholders, including policymakers, healthcare providers, and citizens, to join forces in this vital campaign to eliminate malaria from Nigeria once and for all.
