Zimbabwean Woman Detained for Alleged Ritual Murder of Granddaughter
The Zimbabwe Republic Police have apprehended a 52-year-old woman suspected of fatally poisoning her four-year-old granddaughter in Shurugwi, allegedly for ritualistic reasons. Veronica Mudzipuri, an artisanal miner, was arrested in Chegutu on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, following the tragic death of her granddaughter, Tawanayasha Kadhene.
Details of the Incident
Authorities revealed that Mudzipuri reportedly contaminated the child’s maheu-a traditional fermented maize drink-with a pesticide tablet commonly used in maize farming. After the child succumbed to the poisoning, the suspect is said to have removed a portion of the girl’s cheek flesh. She then combined the flesh with herbs provided by a local traditional healer, cooked the mixture, and consumed it, allegedly as part of a money-making ritual.
Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation
The shocking nature of this case has sparked widespread condemnation across Zimbabwe, with social media platforms flooded with expressions of horror and calls for justice. Many users have urged law enforcement to also apprehend the traditional healer believed to have supplied the ritualistic guidance. This incident has reignited concerns about the increasing frequency of ritual-related crimes in the country, which have seen a 15% rise in reported cases over the past two years, according to recent police data.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that investigations are still underway to uncover all parties involved and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Contextualizing Ritual Crimes in Zimbabwe
Ritual killings, often linked to superstition and traditional beliefs, remain a critical challenge in Zimbabwe and other parts of Southern Africa. Experts note that economic hardships and misinformation contribute to the persistence of such practices. In 2024 alone, Zimbabwe recorded over 30 ritual-related offenses, prompting calls for enhanced community education and stricter enforcement of laws against witchcraft and ritualistic violence.
As the nation grapples with this disturbing trend, authorities emphasize the importance of reporting suspicious activities and supporting victims’ families.
