Kogi State Governor Mandates Grassroots Mobilization for Continuous Voter Registration
Governor Alhaji Usman Ododo of Kogi State has issued a directive requiring all commissioners and political appointees to promptly return to their local constituencies to spearhead community engagement for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
Official Circular Initiates Mobilization Effort
The instruction, effective from Monday, September 1, 2025, was communicated through an official circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of Kogi State, Dr. Folashade Ayoade, as confirmed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo.
Roles and Responsibilities of Government Appointees
The circular mandates that all government appointees actively participate in the CVR campaign, coordinated by the highest-ranking official within each local government area (LGA). Each appointee is tasked with organizing voter registration drives at the ward level and submitting detailed reports outlining the number of newly registered voters in their wards and LGAs at the conclusion of the mobilization period.
Promoting Direct Community Engagement
Governor Ododo stressed the importance of shifting governance from a centralized model based solely in the state capital to a more inclusive approach that prioritizes direct interaction with grassroots communities. He underscored the necessity for government officials to be approachable and responsive to the concerns of their constituents.
Compliance and Accountability Measures
The directive further requires that any appointee intending to leave their assigned LGA during the mobilization period must secure prior written authorization from the Secretary to the State Government. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary proceedings.
Commitment to Strengthening Democratic Participation
Commissioner Fanwo reiterated the administration’s dedication to enhancing grassroots governance and boosting voter turnout in the electoral process. This initiative aligns with recent national efforts, where voter registration drives have seen a 15% increase in participation compared to previous years, reflecting growing civic engagement across Nigeria.
By empowering local leaders to take ownership of voter mobilization, Kogi State aims to ensure a more inclusive and representative democratic process ahead of upcoming elections.
