Silvana Clark

This narrative is part of the My Unsung Hero series by the Hidden Brain team, highlighting individuals whose compassion has profoundly impacted others.

After finishing high school in 1971, Silvana Clark found herself abruptly on her own when her parents relocated to a different state without informing her of their plans or providing financial support.

“They left without asking where I would live or if I intended to pursue college. They didn’t offer any money or guidance,” Clark recounted.

Feeling isolated and uncertain about her future, Clark was fortunate that her former high school drama teacher, George Meshke, had recently accepted a position at a local community college and encouraged her to enroll. With just enough funds to cover tuition and housing, she took his advice.

“Money was so tight that I couldn’t even afford toothpaste. I remember brushing my teeth with water for a long time,” she shared.

Clark’s initial semester went well, but as the winter break approached, she realized she lacked the funds to continue the following term. She confided in Meshke, telling him, “I won’t be able to return next semester. I’ll have to work hard and save up to come back the year after.”

Unexpectedly, just two days later, Meshke delivered surprising news.

“He was usually a bit stern, but he told me, ‘You might not exactly deserve this, but I found out about a drama scholarship at the college, and you’ve been awarded it. Your next semester is fully covered,'” Clark recalled with surprise and gratitude.

Relieved, Clark took on multiple part-time jobs to support herself, including working as a seasonal Easter Bunny at a shopping center and a position with the local parks department, doing whatever she could to save money.

As the academic year drew to a close, Clark sought to renew what she believed was her drama scholarship. However, upon visiting the financial aid office, she discovered no such scholarship existed. The only confirmation she received was that all her tuition fees had been paid.

“It became clear to me that Professor Meshke had quietly covered my tuition,” Clark said, deeply moved by his generosity.

That summer, Clark secured a well-paying job as a camp counselor, which enabled her to continue her education and ultimately graduate-an achievement she credits entirely to Meshke’s kindness.

“I’ll always remember how he told me I had a scholarship and paid for my college. Thinking about it still brings tears to my eyes,” she reflected.

My Unsung Hero is also available as a podcast, with new episodes released every Tuesday. If you want to share the story of someone who has quietly made a difference in your life, record a voice memo and send it to [email protected].
