Shehu Sani Blames Official Negligence for Abuja-Kaduna Train Derailment
Shehu Sani, former Senator representing Kaduna Central, has pointed to governmental neglect as the root cause of the recent derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna passenger train. He emphasized that despite numerous warnings from commuters about safety hazards, authorities failed to take necessary preventive measures.
Passengers’ Safety Concerns Overlooked
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Sani highlighted that travelers had long voiced apprehensions regarding the condition of the railway tracks and overall safety standards. Unfortunately, these repeated alerts were dismissed, culminating in the tragic accident.
“The derailment of the Abuja-Kaduna train yesterday is a direct consequence of the negligence by those responsible. For several months, passengers have consistently reported unsafe conditions, yet their concerns were neglected,” he stated.
Security Risks Along the Route Remain High
Beyond infrastructure issues, Sani also underscored the persistent security threats along the rail corridor. The vast, dense vegetation between Abuja and Kaduna presents significant challenges, making the area vulnerable to criminal activities and attacks.
“The extensive bushland separating Kaduna and Abuja demands serious attention and cannot be underestimated,” he warned.
Context: A History of Challenges on the Abuja-Kaduna Rail Line
The Abuja-Kaduna railway is among Nigeria’s most heavily trafficked routes, facilitating the daily commute of hundreds of passengers. However, it has been plagued by multiple incidents, including a deadly terrorist attack in March 2022 that resulted in fatalities and kidnappings, highlighting ongoing security and operational vulnerabilities.
Looking Ahead: The Need for Urgent Reforms
With the recent derailment adding to the list of setbacks, experts and commuters alike are calling for comprehensive reforms. These include enhanced track maintenance, improved safety protocols, and bolstered security measures to protect passengers and restore confidence in the rail system.
