ADC Demands Emergency Declaration in Katsina and Zamfara Amid Rising Violence
In response to the escalating violence that has claimed over 150 lives in the past two months, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara States. This urgent appeal was made on Sunday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.
Recent Attacks Highlight Security Failures
Abdullahi pointed to the horrific attack in Malumfashi local government area of Katsina, where armed assailants brutally murdered 30 worshippers inside a mosque and set fire to 20 villagers, as a stark indicator of the nation’s deteriorating security framework. Such atrocities, he argued, underscore the collapse of Nigeria’s protective institutions.
Religious Sites No Longer Safe Havens
The ADC condemned the targeting of innocent civilians during prayer, describing it as a heinous act that reflects the grim reality Nigerians face under the current administration. “The massacre of worshippers is a chilling testament to the failure of our national security system,” the statement emphasized, noting that even the Chief of Defence Staff has urged citizens to take up self-defense due to the government’s inability to provide adequate protection.
Criticism of Presidential Response
The party criticized President Tinubu for neglecting his constitutional responsibility to safeguard citizens, accusing him of prioritizing international travels over addressing the country’s adc-calls-tinubu-emergency-katsina-zamfara/” title=”Insecurity Crisis: … Calls on Tinubu to Declare State of … in … and Zamfara”>security crisis. “While communities are being decimated, the President continues to engage in global photo opportunities instead of tackling these urgent issues head-on,” the ADC lamented.
Lack of Empathy and Communication
Further expressing disappointment, the ADC highlighted the absence of any direct communication from the President to the bereaved families or the general public. “The failure to offer condolences or assurances of safety to survivors is unacceptable and contrasts sharply with the leadership standards expected in the countries the President frequently visits,” the statement added.
Call for Immediate Government Action
In conclusion, the ADC urged the federal government to promptly declare a state of emergency in Katsina and Zamfara States. This measure, they argue, is essential to halt the ongoing bloodshed and restore peace and order in these regions.
As of June 2024, Katsina and Zamfara continue to experience frequent violent attacks, with recent reports indicating a 25% increase in fatalities compared to the previous year, underscoring the urgency of decisive intervention.
