In celebration of this year’s Independence Day, photographer Adesuwa Eworo from Captured by Adesuwa Photography presents a heartfelt tribute through her lens – honoring the hands that shaped the nation, the voices that championed its freedom, and the enduring spirit that fuels hope for Nigeria’s future. Her evocative series, titled “HEROES – A Call to Remember”, serves as a visual homage to the country and the legendary figures whose bravery continues to inspire her journey.
Adesuwa’s compelling portraits spotlight iconic personalities such as Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the indomitable Lioness of Lisabi whose activism transformed the role of women; General Yakubu Gowon, a beacon of healing and steadfastness who prioritized reconstruction over retaliation; Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, whose global leadership exemplifies boundless excellence; and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, affectionately known as ‘Zik of Africa,’ whose vision of unity remains a guiding light for the nation.
Through “HEROES,” Adesuwa calls on us to reflect – not merely on the historical names etched in textbooks, but on the essence of patriotism and nationhood they represent.
There is a well-known saying in Nigeria: ‘it takes a village to raise a child.’ This proverb highlights the collective responsibility required to nurture growth and wellbeing. Similarly, nationhood is an ongoing journey, and at 65 years, Nigeria still depends on the dedication of its people – its village.
The progress we enjoy today is the result of the unwavering commitment of past leaders, who have passed the torch to successive generations to carry forward the legacy of our forebears.
As we continue this mission, the selflessness, zeal, and patriotism of our predecessors must guide us. Echoing the words of our former anthem, ‘The labour of our heroes’ past shall never be in vain,’ this is more than a lyric – it is a summons to action and remembrance of the sacrifices that forged The Federal Republic of Nigeria.
It is evident that what the mind retains shapes the heart’s resolve. True progress stems not only from enthusiasm but from understanding. Our nation’s history forms the very fabric of our future, as remembrance fosters pride and identity, nurturing a patriotism often threatened by forgetfulness, complacency, and present-day distractions. By recalling who we are and honoring those who paved the way, we find the strength to chart a purposeful course ahead.
Recall the courage of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the Lioness of Lisabi, whose voice resonated in an era when women speaking out was frowned upon. Her legacy challenges us to defy norms and secure freedoms for generations to come.
Salute General Yakubu Gowon, a living emblem of forgiveness, resilience, and reconciliation, who chose healing and rebuilding after Nigeria’s civil war. His example reminds us that fractured bonds can be mended when hands are willing.
Look up to Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the first woman and African to lead the World Trade Organization, a trailblazer demonstrating that transformative change is possible through decisive action.
Celebrate Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, ‘Zik of Africa,’ Nigeria’s inaugural president and a revolutionary nationalist whose vision transcended tribal divisions, steering the nation toward unity.
“HEROES – A Call to Remember” urges us to honor the past while actively shaping the future. Let the sacrifices of our predecessors not be forgotten. May goodness triumph over adversity through our collective efforts.
You are the HERO of TODAY.
HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY
