On the occasion of Akwa Ibom State’s 38th anniversary on Tuesday, September 23, Governor Pastor Umo Eno expressed profound gratitude to retired General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida for his pivotal role in the state’s establishment.
During a special broadcast from Uyo, the state capital, Governor Eno commended the unwavering dedication of both military and civilian administrations that have propelled Akwa Ibom’s progress over nearly four decades.
“This journey has been marked by remarkable transformation, enduring peace, and a strengthening of our shared identity and unity,” he remarked.
“Our founding fathers envisioned a cohesive state grounded in common values and aspirations. Though their dream was not realized in their lifetime, it was brought to fruition 38 years ago with the birth of Akwa Ibom, the Land of Promise-a home to resilient and enterprising people.”
“On behalf of the government and citizens of this great state, I extend heartfelt appreciation to former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.) for this invaluable legacy. May he be blessed with continued health, wisdom, and peace,” the governor prayed.
Reflecting on the state’s humble beginnings, Governor Eno noted that Uyo was once a modest rural settlement lacking modern amenities. Thanks to the cumulative efforts of successive leaders, the state has evolved into a vibrant hub for investment, tourism, and hospitality.
“Akwa Ibom has emerged as a preferred destination, often described as the nation’s best-kept secret. Where once there were dusty, narrow paths resembling forest trails, we now boast one of the country’s most advanced road networks. Our people, once underestimated, have risen to prominent roles worldwide across diverse professions.”
“Today, Uyo features some of Nigeria’s most sophisticated residential estates. Our homegrown airline, Ibom Air, proudly represents our excellence in aviation, signaling our growing influence in this sector.”
“In sports, we are honored as the official FIFA and CAF host for World Cup and African Cup matches. Across the state, there is a palpable energy and optimism about the future. Our economy remains robust as we unite to build a prosperous tomorrow that fully harnesses our potential,” Governor Eno stated.
He further emphasized, “These 38 years have been a testament to divine favor-lifting us up during challenging times. We have every reason to celebrate our achievements.”
Paying homage to his predecessors, the governor described them as visionary and committed leaders whose legacies have been instrumental in the state’s advancement. “We owe them respect and gratitude rather than criticism,” he affirmed.
Looking ahead, Governor Eno outlined his ambition to broaden the state’s developmental horizons by reducing reliance on oil and championing tourism, which he dubbed the “new black gold.”
He also underscored the critical role of agriculture in ensuring food security and generating income, announcing an upcoming tree crop development initiative aimed at restoring Akwa Ibom’s status as Nigeria’s foremost oil palm producer and fostering sustainable economic growth for future generations.
Infrastructure development remains a priority, with ongoing projects to improve rural access roads and expand the state’s transportation network as promised.
Additionally, Governor Eno highlighted key focus areas of his administration over the past two years, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, security, and human capital development, all geared toward enhancing the well-being of Akwa Ibom’s people.
