From Abandonment to Achievement: The Inspiring Journey of Hope from Akwa Ibom
In a heart-wrenching incident that captured global attention, a young boy named Hope from Akwa Ibom was once cruelly accused of witchcraft by his own family and abandoned to perish from starvation. This tragic event unfolded in early 2016, when Danish humanitarian Anja Ringgren Lovén encountered the severely malnourished two-year-old child wandering the streets alone.
Rescue and Rehabilitation: The Beginning of a New Life
Upon receiving an urgent call, Anja, alongside her husband David Emmanuel Umem and a dedicated rescue team, swiftly intervened to save Hope. They brought him to the Children’s Education and Development Foundation (ACAEDF), affectionately known as the “Land of Hope,” a sanctuary committed to nurturing vulnerable children.
Despite being born deaf, Hope’s resilience and determination have been nothing short of remarkable. Over the years, he has not only survived but flourished, overcoming the challenges posed by his disability and the trauma of his early life.
Academic Success and Personal Growth
Fast forward to July 2025, Hope proudly completed his primary education with outstanding academic results, earning one of the highest grades in his class. He is now preparing to embark on his secondary school journey this September, a milestone that symbolizes hope and transformation.
Anja shared this uplifting update on her Facebook page on August 25, expressing profound gratitude for Hope’s progress and the impact his story has had worldwide.
“Hope has defied the odds. He graduated this year and will start secondary school next month. His story has touched hearts globally, and every day I am amazed by his incredible growth,” Anja wrote.
“Though deaf, Hope communicates fluently through sign language. Beyond his intelligence, he is a gifted artist, a passionate dancer, and possesses a warm, caring nature coupled with a wonderful sense of humor.”
“While Hope’s journey fills me with joy, it also reminds me of countless other children accused of witchcraft whose lives are tragically cut short before they can be known or helped.”
“Our mission at Land of Hope continues, fueled by your support, to rescue and empower these vulnerable children despite the uphill battle we face.”
Changing Perceptions and Saving Lives
Hope’s story sheds light on the persistent issue of witchcraft accusations in parts of Nigeria and other regions, where thousands of children suffer stigmatization and abandonment annually. According to recent reports, over 15,000 children have been labeled as witches in Nigeria alone, facing abuse and neglect.
Organizations like Land of Hope are vital in combating these harmful beliefs by providing education, healthcare, and psychological support to affected children, helping them reclaim their dignity and potential.
Hope’s Multifaceted Talents and Bright Future
Beyond academics, Hope has blossomed into a multi-talented individual. His artistic skills and love for dance have become outlets for self-expression and healing. His story is a testament to the power of compassion and the importance of inclusive education for children with disabilities.

Continuing the Fight Against Stigma
Hope’s journey is a beacon of optimism, but it also highlights the urgent need to address the cultural stigmas that endanger many children’s lives. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, there is hope for a future where no child is condemned due to superstition.
Supporters of Land of Hope and similar initiatives play a crucial role in this ongoing battle, ensuring that more children like Hope receive the care and opportunities they deserve.
