Apapa Port Customs Command Records Over ₦161 Billion Revenue Despite B’Odogwu System Challenges
In a remarkable financial achievement, the Apapa Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully generated ₦161,258,483,474.63 within a span of just three weeks. This milestone was reached despite ongoing technical difficulties affecting the Unified Customs Management System, widely known as B’Odogwu.
Addressing System Glitches and Stakeholder Engagements
According to a statement from SC JT Ayagbalo, the Public Relations Officer for the command, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, the Customs Area Controller (CAC), has expressed confidence that the B’Odogwu platform will soon stabilize and exceed user expectations. This optimism follows extensive consultations led by the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, aimed at enhancing the system’s performance.
Comptroller Olomu highlighted that these improvements are anticipated as a result of continuous dialogue with key stakeholders, including the Nigerian Shippers Council and terminal operators, to mitigate the impact of recent system downtimes on trade operations.
Revenue Performance Amidst Operational Challenges
Between August 1 and August 22, 2025, the Apapa Command collected over ₦161 billion through the B’Odogwu system, underscoring the platform’s potential despite its teething problems. This figure reflects the command’s critical role in Nigeria’s trade ecosystem and the resilience of its operations.
Commitment to Resolving Technical Issues and Enhancing Trade Facilitation
Comptroller Olomu reassured stakeholders that the NCS’s dedicated ICT team is working tirelessly to implement a lasting solution to the technical setbacks. He emphasized that the B’Odogwu system is designed to streamline customs processes more effectively than previous ICT platforms, promising a smoother trade experience in the near future.
To further support this effort, the Zonal Coordinator, Charles Orbih, has been actively engaging with importers, licensed customs agents, and freight forwarders at the Apapa Command to address their concerns and foster collaboration.
Enhanced Operational Measures and Stakeholder Support
Recognizing the strategic importance of Apapa Port, Comptroller Olomu noted that the CGC is personally overseeing the resolution process and coordinating with sister agencies to facilitate demurrage waivers and reduce delays caused by system downtime. Additionally, customs officers have been instructed to extend working hours, including weekends, to clear backlogs and minimize disruptions.
He expressed gratitude for the patience and understanding demonstrated by all stakeholders, affirming that their trust in the NCS’s ability to overcome these challenges is well-placed. This collective effort reflects a shared commitment to advancing Nigeria’s indigenous ICT initiatives and enhancing the efficiency of customs operations.
Looking Ahead: A Promising Future for B’Odogwu
With ongoing improvements and stakeholder collaboration, the B’Odogwu system is poised to become a robust platform that significantly boosts trade facilitation and revenue generation. The Apapa Port Command remains a pivotal player in this transformation, driving Nigeria’s customs modernization forward.
