Asamoah Gyan, the celebrated Ghanaian football icon, has addressed rumors claiming he accused Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen of feigning injury during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda, according to Soccernet.ng.
Gyan, who holds the record as Ghana’s highest-ever goal scorer, firmly rejected the circulating allegations that implicated both Nigeria and Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray.
Earlier this week, controversy arose when a Turkish news source, Habersarikirmizi, reported that Gyan had questioned the authenticity of Osimhen’s injury.
The report claimed that Gyan suggested Osimhen was instructed by Galatasaray to “travel to Africa, participate briefly, then pretend to be injured” so he could return sooner and prioritize club commitments.
This statement quickly ignited a fierce debate on social media platforms, dividing supporters from both Nigeria and Ghana.
However, Gyan has now come forward to refute these claims, labeling them as completely false. In a response on X, he stated: “This is fake news, my brother.”

The individual who initially posted the misleading information has since issued an apology to Gyan and removed the tweet.
Osimhen sustained a leg injury during Nigeria’s narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo on September 6, forcing an early substitution.
The 26-year-old forward was subsequently sidelined for Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with South Africa three days later. Medical evaluations at Galatasaray have confirmed that Osimhen will be out of action for approximately two weeks.
The allegations linked to Asamoah Gyan stirred significant tension, especially considering the historic football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria, as well as the widespread belief that European clubs sometimes discourage African players from participating in international qualifiers. Nonetheless, Gyan’s clarification confirms he never questioned Osimhen’s honesty.
As Nigeria’s second-highest goal scorer, Osimhen is now focused on rehabilitation, aiming to be fit for Galatasaray’s upcoming Champions League group stage matches.
