The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has set a firm 14-day deadline for the Federal Government to address unresolved issues impacting Nigeria’s university system.
This decision emerged from the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting convened on Sunday at the University of Abuja. In a statement issued on Monday and signed by ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, the union voiced deep frustration over what it termed the government’s ongoing disregard for the higher education sector.
The union declared that should the Federal Government fail to fulfill its demands within the stipulated two weeks, ASUU will initiate a two-week warning strike, which could escalate into an indefinite strike if the situation remains unaddressed.
Previously, the Ministry of Education established a committee led by its permanent secretary, Abel Enitan, tasked with evaluating ASUU’s proposals and fostering stability within the university system. However, no official outcomes or decisions from this committee have been disclosed to the public.
ASUU’s core demands include revisiting the 2009 agreement, disbursing revitalization funds earmarked for public universities, settling outstanding salary arrears, and creating a sustainable funding model for tertiary institutions.
