The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has initiated a nationwide twostrike-in-unijos-over-non-payment-of-salary/” title=”ASUU begins … in UNIJOS over non-payment of salary”>asuu-issues-two-week-strike-deadline-nigeria/” title=”… Sets Two-Week Ultimatum to Nigerian Government, Threatens Nationwide …”>-week warning strike following the lapse of the 14-day ultimatum it previously issued to the Federal Government.
Speaking to the media in Abuja on Sunday, ASUU President Professor Chris Piwuna confirmed that the industrial action commenced immediately after the deadline expired at midnight.
The union explained that this strike is intended to pressure the government into fulfilling outstanding agreements and tackling the ongoing issues plaguing Nigeria’s public university system.
On September 28, 2025, ASUU had set a 14-day deadline for the federal government as part of its intensified campaign to resolve persistent challenges within the country’s higher education sector.
ASUU emphasized that the strike became unavoidable after all efforts to negotiate with the government failed to produce meaningful progress.
Professor Piwuna stated, “Therefore, all ASUU branches are instructed to commence a full withdrawal of academic activities starting from 12:01 a.m. on Monday, October 13, 2025. This warning strike will be comprehensive, as decided during the recent NEC meeting.”
