The House of Representatives has decided to step in to address the ongoing conflict between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
This development came after Hon. Sesi Whingan, the representative for Badagry Federal Constituency in Lagos State, presented a motion during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Whingan emphasized that the intervention seeks to establish a permanent resolution to the dispute, which prompted ASUU to initiate a two-week warning strike starting Monday, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum given to the government.
The union’s key demands include finalizing the renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, releasing withheld salaries and outstanding payments, ensuring consistent funding, and revitalizing public minister-over-alleged-sack-of-varsities-vcs/” title=”Reps invite education … over alleged sack of varsities’ VCs”>universities across the country.
ASUU President Chris Piwuna criticized the government for neglecting the recommendations of the Yayale Ahmed-led committee, which was appointed in 2024 to revisit the 2009 agreement. He noted that the Education Minister only acknowledged receipt of the committee’s report several months after its submission.
In reaction, the Minister of Education instructed university vice-chancellors to implement the “No Work, No Pay” policy and maintain detailed records of lecturers participating in the strike.
This strike marks ASUU’s first nationwide industrial action in nearly three years and has already caused significant disruptions to examinations at multiple universities.
