Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu for his visit to Plateau State on Saturday, October 4. The President attended the funeral of Mama Lydia Yilwatda, mother of APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, despite never having visited the state to offer condolences to victims of the ongoing violent attacks ravaging the region.
In a statement shared on his official X account this evening, Atiku condemned the President’s trip as a troubling indication of misplaced priorities and a blatant disregard for people-with-questionable-character/” title=”Otti Urges Communities: Say No to Electing Leaders with Questionable Character!”>responsible leadership. He expressed disappointment that instead of reaching out to those suffering from relentless violence and displacement, the President chose to attend a political funeral tied to his party’s leadership.
Atiku’s message reads:
“While vast areas of our nation remain engulfed in insecurity, with countless innocent lives lost, it is profoundly disheartening that President Bola Tinubu has yet to visit any of the affected states to offer solace to grieving families.
Today, however, the President suddenly remembered Plateau State-one of the most terrorized zones in North Central Nigeria-not to share in the sorrow of its people, but to partake in a social gathering linked to his party’s national chairman.
This choice starkly highlights a failure in leadership and a cruel insensitivity, as families in Plateau continue to bury their loved ones. Instead of standing with the people during their darkest moments, President Tinubu opted to attend a political event.
Between the APC National Chairman and the President, what unfolded today was a cold display of indifference toward empathy, compassion, and the sanctity of human life.
From Benue to Niger and recently Kwara, the North Central region has suffered some of the most brutal violence in recent memory. Yet, the APC-led administration has never found it necessary to physically support the victims or console their families.
Even during Tinubu’s symbolic visit to Benue State in June, he failed to visit Yelewata-the heart of the massacre-choosing instead to remain in Makurdi, turning away from those still mourning and suffering.
Now, in Plateau State, the President is not there to comfort the bereaved or offer reassurance to the brokenhearted but to celebrate with his party’s elite while the people grieve.
The message is unmistakable: this is a leader who prefers celebration over sympathy, who finds joy where his people find pain.
The Nigerian populace is watching closely, and they will not forget.”
