Bala Mohammed, the Bauchi State governor and chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF), has labeled those abandoning the party due to the actions of a few individuals as lacking courage.
Despite ongoing difficulties, Governor Mohammed affirmed that the PDP’s national convention scheduled for November 15 in Ibadan, Oyo State, will proceed as planned.
He made these remarks during the launch of the media and publicity sub-committee for the party’s upcoming national convention.
According to reports, Enugu State governor Peter Mbah is expected to officially exit the PDP next Tuesday, with speculation mounting that Bayelsa State governor Douye Diri and Taraba State governor Agbu Kefas might follow suit shortly.
Earlier this year, Governors Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom and Sheriff Oborewori of Delta State had already left the party.
Addressing party members, Governor Mohammed urged them not to be discouraged by the recent wave of defections, stating, “Remain steadfast and do not let the departures or the skeptics shake your resolve. Instead, let these challenges strengthen your commitment.”
He emphasized, “True strength lies in standing firm. Walking away because of one individual is an act of cowardice. You are leaders of resilience and bravery.”
Confidently asserting the inevitability of the convention, Mohammed declared, “Our party has endured many hardships, yet we continue to persevere. This convention will take place in Ibadan, God willing. No obstacle, no matter how formidable, will deter us. Should these negative forces prevail over the PDP, it would be a defeat for Nigeria itself.”
The governor also expressed deep concern over the nation’s current state, highlighting that the country has never faced such challenges as it has under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He argued that since the PDP’s exit from power in 2015, a leadership vacuum has persisted.
“It is imperative that we act decisively within the democratic framework to restore progress and stability,” Governor Mohammed concluded.
