The Bauchi State Police Command has initiated an extensive inquiry into the tragic death of 24-year-old Fatima Salihu Mohammed, whose decomposed remains were found in a maize field within the staff quarters of Federal Polytechnic Bauchi.
The incident came to light on September 25, 2025, when Fatima’s father, 62-year-old Salihu Mohammed Chimo, reported to the ‘E’ Division Police Headquarters that his daughter had left their home the previous day to purchase groceries at Birshin Fulani but failed to return.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, specialized detectives equipped with surveillance technology were promptly deployed to locate Fatima.
“On September 29, the Command received an urgent call from the Village Head of Birshin Fulani, who relayed information from Bashar Adamu. While working on his father’s maize farm inside the Federal Polytechnic staff quarters, Bashar noticed a strong, unpleasant smell. “Specifically, at around 12:00 pm on September 29, Bashar Adamu, a resident of Birshin Fulani, detected a foul odor while tending to his father’s maize farm located within the Federal Polytechnic staff quarters. Upon further inspection, he uncovered the decomposing remains of a female,” the police added.
Wakil noted that officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer of ‘E’ Division, quickly secured the scene and identified the body as that of the missing Fatima Salihu Mohammed. “Her personal effects, including the groceries she had bought, were found beside her,” he confirmed.
Her remains were transported to the Federal Polytechnic Clinic, where a medical doctor officially pronounced her dead.
The police spokesperson further stated that the body was subsequently handed over to her family for burial according to Islamic customs.
In response to the case, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has established a dedicated homicide unit to carry out a thorough investigation.
He pledged that the police would exhaust all investigative avenues, collect all pertinent evidence, and ensure that justice is served.
