The Bauchi State Police have successfully detained seven individuals suspected of involvement in the violent robbery that targeted the student hostel at the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, on the night of August 12.

This brazen attack, which occurred around midnight, resulted in multiple students sustaining serious injuries and the loss of personal belongings. The incident caused significant disruption to the institution’s academic schedule and sparked intense protests by students demanding enhanced security measures. Law enforcement responded by deploying teargas to disperse the demonstrators.

In a statement released on Friday, September 12, Police Spokesman Ahmed Wakil confirmed the arrests, revealing that the suspects have admitted their roles in the criminal act.

According to Wakil, the apprehended individuals confessed to terrorizing several neighborhoods, including Yelwa, Birshi Gandu, Birshin Fulani, and Gwallameji. Armed with dangerous weapons and flashlights, they unlawfully entered homes, seized valuables, and inflicted harm on residents who resisted, sometimes fleeing across state borders to avoid capture.

The police identified the suspects as young men from various parts of Bauchi metropolis, notably Lushi, Birshin Fulani, and Birshi Gandu. The detainees are:

  • Mansur Yakubu (20), alias Chasu, from Lushi
  • Abbas Auwal (20), known as Abe
  • Musa Bala (20), also called Baban Nani, resident of Lushi
  • Aliyu Ahmadu (21), nicknamed Yellow, from Lushi
  • Zurkarlaini Aliyu (20), alias Baki, from Birshin Fulani
  • Muftahu Ibrahim (20), known as Dodo, from Lushi
  • Hamza Bala (29), called R-Kelly, from Lushi

These individuals have not only confessed to their participation but also implicated thirteen others, including Adamu Muhammad, popularly referred to as Daddy, a resident of Birshin Fulani. Adamu Muhammad was arrested on September 1 by detectives from the Yelwa Divisional Police Headquarters.

Adamu Muhammad Lawan, identified as the ringleader, admitted orchestrating the armed robbery at the Federal Polytechnic. He revealed that the operation involved roughly twenty participants drawn from Birshin Fulani, Birshi Gandu, Lushi, and other parts of Bauchi metropolis.

As the mastermind, Adamu Muhammad coordinated the attack on the student hostels, targeting students’ possessions such as mobile phones, laptops, and power banks. Investigations uncovered that he profited from the stolen goods, selling three mobile phones-brands Oppo, Samsung, and Infinix-for 40,000 Naira through an associate named Salmanu, also known as Papus.
