Oba Ewuare II of Benin has brought an end to a long-standing leadership dispute among market women that affected markets throughout the seven local government areas within Edo South Senatorial District.
The resolution took place during a verification session at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. The conflict arose when two members of the Benin Royal family both claimed the title of Iyeki (market leader) at Oba Market. Princess (Mrs) Judith Oshodin and Princess (Mrs) Osarogie Rosemary Osagie were both disqualified from contesting for the leadership role by the Oba. Similar leadership conflicts in other markets across the region were resolved in the same manner.
At the gathering, Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin, delivered Oba Ewuare’s message to over 55 market leaders present. The meeting was facilitated by Frank Irabor, secretary of the Benin Traditional Council.
During the session, Irabor addressed and clarified misunderstandings that had been circulated in a recent public statement issued by the Benin Traditional Council under the Oba’s authority concerning the leadership disputes.
The Oba instructed market women in the affected areas to democratically select their leaders and submit their names to the palace within a two-week timeframe. This directive aims to restore order and harmony across the various markets.
Market leaders who were uncontested in their positions were smoothly confirmed and empowered to manage their respective domains, pending the completion of customary rites in accordance with tradition. The Oba also bestowed his blessings upon the markets.
The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm and unity as market leaders expressed their collective support and optimism following the resolution.
