Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has strongly condemned the recent deadly assault on security personnel in Benue State. He emphasized that Nigeria cannot afford to keep losing its uniformed officers without tackling the root causes of the ongoing insecurity.
The incident occurred at Agu Centre in the Mbatyula/Mberev Council Ward within Katsina-Ala Local Government Area, where a joint security team was ambushed. Reports indicate that at least 16 security operatives were killed in the attack, which is believed to have been carried out by armed herdsmen and local militias. Several officers remain unaccounted for, while others suffered serious injuries. Additionally, the attackers set fire to patrol vehicles and looted motorcycles belonging to the security forces.
Sharing his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Obi expressed profound grief over the persistent loss of lives among Nigeria’s security personnel.
“In recent weeks, our nation has once again been plunged into sorrow due to the tragic deaths of our security forces. This includes our valiant soldiers, members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, courageous policemen, and community vigilantes. These men and women in uniform have made the ultimate sacrifice in their commitment to safeguarding our country,” he stated.

Obi called on Nigerian authorities to interpret these repeated attacks as a critical warning, urging a comprehensive reform of the country’s security framework and enhanced support for frontline personnel.
“The frequency of these attacks must serve as a clarion call for leaders to adequately equip and incentivize our security operatives. Security should be the cornerstone of effective governance,” he asserted.
He further appealed to both federal and state governments to ensure that the families of the fallen receive fair compensation and ongoing assistance.
“It is imperative that the government steps up to provide just compensation and support to the spouses, children, and parents of these heroes who have sacrificed their lives. This is not an act of charity but a matter of justice for those who gave everything for our safety,” Obi emphasized.
Paying tribute to the victims, Obi honored their bravery and dedication: “To every fallen hero, may your soul find eternal peace. Your patriotism and sacrifice will forever be remembered. To the families left behind, you are not alone-may God grant you strength and solace.”
This tragic ambush in Benue adds to a growing list of violent attacks against security forces nationwide, intensifying concerns about Nigeria’s internal security and the protection of those charged with maintaining peace and order.
