On May 29, 2023, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia assumed leadership of Benue State, ushering in a new era marked by transformative progress across various sectors. His tenure has rekindled optimism, delivered impactful initiatives, fostered a spirit of patriotism, and restored public trust in government institutions.

Governor Alia has been intentional in his approach, especially in elevating the roles of youth and women within the state’s development framework. Beyond appointing young leaders to strategic government roles, his administration has actively created avenues for skill acquisition, direct employment, and meaningful participation in diverse developmental projects.

Benue State boasts a predominantly youthful population, with approximately 57.3% classified as youth. This demographic presents a vital opportunity for the state to harness their talents, vigor, and innovative ideas, channeling these assets toward sustainable growth and prosperity.

In a notable initiative on September 8, 2025, Governor Alia launched the distribution of 4,000 tenera oil palm seedlings to young people throughout Benue. This strategic move is poised to generate substantial economic benefits, not only empowering the youth but also stimulating the state’s agricultural sector.

The tenera oil palm is a hybrid variety prized for its high productivity and rapid fruiting cycle. Each tree can yield up to 200 fruit bunches annually, with individual bunches weighing as much as 30 kilograms, potentially producing around 6,000 kilograms of oil per tree each year. This distribution reflects Governor Alia’s visionary leadership, positioning agriculture as a cornerstone for youth empowerment in Benue.

“These palms will start bearing fruit in about three years, creating wealth and opportunities for many in Benue State. Governor Alia’s approach is not merely about providing immediate aid but equipping our youth with sustainable skills,” stated Deputy Governor Sam Ode during the seedling launch and the inauguration of the Benue Youth House in Makurdi.

The palm oil project is championed by Mr. Alex Addingi, the Governor’s Special Adviser on International Business, whose expertise is instrumental in driving this agricultural empowerment agenda.

Beyond economic empowerment, this initiative also serves as a proactive measure to divert youth from political unrest and violence.

“Our administration does not tolerate political violence. We recognize that the youth of Benue are inherently peaceful, and we encourage them to maintain this stance,” Governor Alia affirmed.

The establishment of the Benue Youth House further exemplifies the administration’s dedication to nurturing young talent through sustainable platforms. As the first facility of its kind in the state, it symbolizes the organizational prowess and innovative spirit of Benue’s youth.

“It is unprecedented in our political history to witness youths unite to create such a landmark. This center will bolster the creative industries and act as a vibrant hub for innovation and collaboration,” Governor Alia remarked.

Hon. Terver Gbenda, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Chair of the Taskforce on Illegal Levies, described the Youth House as a “realization of a long-held dream” and a clear indication of the administration’s commitment to youth inclusion and empowerment.

To date, over 13,000 young individuals have been integrated into various state institutions, including SUBEB, Benue State University Teaching Hospital, and BIPC. Additionally, thousands have benefited from agricultural subsidies such as discounted fertilizers and agrochemicals. Complementing these efforts are infrastructure developments like township and rural road projects, designed to enhance economic activities in remote areas.

The enduring impact of Governor Alia’s people-focused initiatives is unmistakable. Unlike fleeting political handouts, these programs offer comprehensive, lifelong empowerment, liberating the youth from dependency on exploitative political figures.

Prioritizing critical sectors such as transportation, healthcare, and agriculture, the administration is investing in the long-term welfare of Benue State and its youthful population.

For the youth attending the launch event, it was a moment of reflection and renewed commitment to support Governor Alia’s leadership as the 2027 elections approach. They underscored the importance of voter registration and active participation, celebrated the Youth House as a breakthrough in political inclusion, and acknowledged the administration’s strides in youth empowerment, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and infrastructure development.
