South African artist Tyla Laura Seethal, professionally known as Tyla, captured widespread attention at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards by securing the Best Afrobeats award for her hit track “Push 2 Start.”
Her victory was particularly notable as she triumphed over prominent Nigerian contenders such as Asake, Burna Boy, Rema, Tems, and Wizkid, underscoring her rising influence in the Afrobeats scene.
This achievement marked Tyla’s second win in the Afrobeats category, highlighting the genre’s expanding global footprint and its significant role in shaping contemporary music.

The star-studded event took place on Sunday, September 7, at New York’s UBS Arena. Lady Gaga emerged as the evening’s biggest winner, taking home four awards, followed closely by Ariana Grande-who won Video of the Year-and Sabrina Carpenter, each earning three accolades.
