Playing at their temporary base in Abeokuta, Remo Stars, the reigning NPFL champions, showcased an impressive display by dismantling Comoros champions Zilimadjou 4-0 in the opening leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round.

Leonard Ngenge opened the scoring with a composed finish in the 12th minute, and Chigozie Shileku doubled the lead just before halftime.

Malian striker Adama Goita increased the margin midway through the second half, and substitute Samson Olasupo sealed the emphatic victory late in the game.

This triumph marks Remo Stars’ largest win in any continental tournament and represents the most significant victory by a Nigerian club on African soil in the past three years.

Coach Daniel Ogunmodede expressed pride in the team’s progress following last season’s disappointing early exit against Medeama.

“A few years ago, we were battling in the second division, and now we stand as NPFL champions. Our aim is to establish ourselves on the continental stage, and this win is a clear indication that we are prepared,” stated the Super Eagles assistant coach.

With a commanding lead, Remo Stars will head to Comoros for the second leg, eyeing a potential clash with South African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns in the subsequent round.

Rivers United Secure Crucial Away Draw

In Brazzaville, Rivers United kicked off their CAF Confederation Cup journey with a 0-0 stalemate against Aigles du Congo.

The Rivers side fashioned multiple opportunities but were thwarted by a resilient Congolese defense. Defensively solid, Stanley Eguma’s squad ensured the match ended evenly, setting up a decisive second leg in Uyo.

Given the away goals rule still applies in CAF tournaments, Rivers United understand that only a home victory will guarantee progression and prevent an early exit.

Kwara United Battle in a Thrilling Ghana Encounter

In Accra, Kwara United were narrowly defeated 4-3 by Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko in an exhilarating Confederation Cup match.

Emmanuel Antwi’s early goal for Kotoko was quickly equalized by Johnmark Atule, but Albert Amoah soon restored the home side’s lead.

Atule struck again during first-half stoppage time to level the score at 2-2.

After the break, Kotoko regained momentum with Joseph Ablorh’s goal, followed by a penalty converted by Amoah. Despite this, Kwara United showed resilience, with Abdulraheem Shola’s late goal keeping their hopes alive ahead of the return fixture in Abuja on September 28. The victor will face Moroccan powerhouse Wydad Casablanca in the next stage.

Abia Warriors’ Continental Debut Ends in Draw

In Uyo, Abia Warriors made their maiden continental appearance but had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Malian outfit Djoliba.

Chukwuemeka Obioma made history by netting the club’s first-ever goal in African competition in the 21st minute, but Djoliba equalized just two minutes before full time.

Coach Imama Amapakabo expressed frustration over the team’s lack of effective game management.

“Possession without intent yields no rewards. At one stage, my players resorted to aimless clearances without contesting the ball. The Malian side played with purpose, and we paid the price,” Amapakabo admitted post-match.

Facing a challenging second leg in Bamako, the Warriors must secure at least a scoring draw to keep their campaign alive.
