Nigeria’s Super Falcons and the U-17 Flamingos have both secured nominations for the Women’s National Team of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards, according to Soccernet.ng.
Having captured their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown earlier this year, the Super Falcons are poised to defend their title and aim for a third straight CAF National Team of the Year accolade.
Under the leadership of Justin Madugu, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience and skill, overcoming formidable opponents such as South Africa, Zambia, and host nation Morocco during their July campaign. This triumph further cemented their reputation as Africa’s dominant force in women’s football.
Morocco, who impressed by reaching the WAFCON final and held a 2-0 lead at halftime before succumbing 3-2 to Nigeria, are expected to be the Falcons’ toughest rivals for the award.
Other strong contenders include Ghana and South Africa, both semifinalists, though they face an uphill battle against Nigeria’s storied legacy and commanding presence on the continent.
Meanwhile, the U-17 Flamingos have risen as one of Africa’s most promising youth squads.

Guided by coach Bankole Olowookere, the Flamingos maintained an unbeaten streak during qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. Their ambition is to become the first African team to claim the women’s youth World Cup title, a milestone that could give them an edge in the CAF awards race.

Justin Madugu Leads Nigeria’s Strong Contingent
Nigeria’s excellence extends beyond team achievements to individual accolades.
Justin Madugu, head coach of the Super Falcons, has been nominated for Women’s Coach of the Year after steering his team to continental triumph.

Earlier this year, Madugu made history as the first Nigerian coach to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or, a landmark that could influence voters in his favor.
Bankole Olowookere, the Flamingos’ coach, also earned a spot on the shortlist, a testament to his role in nurturing one of Africa’s most exciting young teams. Both coaches will face tough competition from South Africa’s Desiree Ellis and Morocco’s Jorge Vilda.
In player categories, Flamingos captain Shakirat Moshood has been recognized as a finalist for CAF Young Player of the Year (Women).

Adding to Nigeria’s strong representation, Bayelsa Queens, champions of the 2025 Nigerian Women’s Football League, have been nominated for Club of the Year (Women).

In this category, Bayelsa Queens will contend with prominent clubs such as South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, Morocco’s ASFAR, and TP Mazembe.
