The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged churches, families, and communities nationwide to actively support the federal government’s current measles-rubella immunization drive.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN’s president, praised the campaign as a courageous and impactful initiative aimed at shielding Nigerian children from diseases that can be prevented through vaccination.

Speaking at the launch event of the Nationwide Integrated Measles-Rubella Vaccine Campaign held on Monday in Abuja, Okoh applauded the government’s dedication to lowering child mortality rates and strengthening the country’s healthcare infrastructure.

“This comprehensive campaign, which combines efforts against measles-rubella, polio, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases, clearly reflects the federal government and its partners’ unwavering commitment to protecting the health and future of our children and communities,” he remarked.

Emphasizing the importance of incorporating the measles-rubella vaccine into Nigeria’s national immunization program, the CAN leader called it “a significant achievement in our public health progress, symbolizing a renewed pledge to safeguard every child from preventable illnesses.”

Recalling a prior engagement with the C-WINS and Measles-Rubella Coalition where CAN promised its backing for the campaign, he stated, “We have honored that commitment by mobilizing all five CAN blocs to prepare for the widespread vaccine rollout.”

“As spiritual leaders, we understand that the wellbeing of our people is fundamental to the nation’s growth. A healthy society lays the groundwork for productivity, creativity, and harmony,” he added.

Okoh also lauded Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her proactive role in promoting the vaccination initiative.

He extended appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), and their development partners for their joint efforts, while encouraging parents, guardians, and church authorities across the country to ensure every eligible child is vaccinated.

“We urge all parents, caregivers, and communities throughout Nigeria to seize this vital opportunity by making sure every child receives the vaccine and is protected. We also call on churches nationwide to play an active role in raising awareness and mobilizing support,” he emphasized.

Okoh expressed optimism that this campaign will contribute to building a healthier, more resilient, and prosperous Nigeria.
