Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho ended a six-month goal drought yesterday by netting on his debut for Celtic, coming off the bench to help secure a 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock, according to Soccernet.ng.

The ex-Leicester City striker was introduced with 20 minutes remaining. Following a VAR review that favored Celtic due to the ball striking a Kilmarnock defender’s arm, Iheanacho confidently converted the resulting penalty, igniting celebrations among the fans.

After the match, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers expressed his satisfaction with Iheanacho’s promising start at the club, praising the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup champion’s impact.

Rodgers to Monitor Iheanacho’s Progress Closely

Having previously collaborated at Leicester City, where they clinched the 2021 FA Cup and Community Shield, Rodgers is keen to gradually integrate Iheanacho into Celtic’s squad. The manager believes the 28-year-old still possesses significant quality to influence games at the highest level.

“I was very pleased with Kels. The last penalty he took for me was at Wembley when we triumphed over Manchester City in the Community Shield, which was another memorable occasion,” Rodgers told the Daily Record.

“That was a crucial moment for him, especially in front of the fans. We earned the penalty, but he still had to convert it, and he did so confidently, securing the win for us.

“There’s no doubt he has the ability to shine in big moments, and as his fitness improves, his performances will only get stronger.

“Our usual penalty taker was off the pitch, and while Benji Nygren showed great confidence in wanting to take it, my message was clear: Kels was the man for the job.

“I know the quality and confidence he brings, and I understand how important scoring a goal is for his morale.

“I’m thrilled for him and the team, especially after a challenging few weeks. This victory means a lot to us,” Rodgers concluded.

Looking ahead, Iheanacho is expected to earn his first start next weekend as Celtic prepares to face Partick Thistle in a League Cup encounter.
