Civic group accuses Akpabio of voting N4bn through Agric Ministry, others to build police stations in A’Ibom

A civic accountability organisation, MonITng, has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio, of voting N4 billion through the Ministry of Agriculture to build police stations in Akwa Ibom State.

In a statement released on Saturday, the group alleged that the 2025 Zonal Intervention Projects facilitated by Akpabio had exposed serious cases of misplaced priorities, duplication, and potential diversion of public funds.

It stated that the allocation was routed through the Federal Co-operative College, Ibadan, an agency with no capacity to execute such projects.

The organisation also cited several projects, including “Project ZIP20250388: Construction of Rural Market Farming in Abiakana, Abak Oko, Atan, and Mbiabet Esire Farming Communities (Lot AC) — ₦1,000,000,000.”

Other project cited by the organization include::

“Project ZIP20250389: Construction of Rural Farming Markets in Edem Idim, Nkana Ikpe, Nnung Inuen, Obioma, and Ubeng Farming Communities (Lot 13) — ₦1,000,000,000. Project ZIP20250390: Construction of Police Station in Abiakpo, Akpan Essiet, Enin Udobia, Ata Abama, and Asakpa Farming Communities (Lot 1–2) — ₦1,000,000,000.”

Others are:

“Project ZIP20250391: Fabrication and Equipping of Police Station in Nkwot Etok, Akata, Ibong Nto Akan, Nung Eduo, and Uruk Ata Communities (Lot 1–2) — ₦1,000,000,000.”

” Altogether, ₦4 billion has been earmarked for markets and police stations in farming communities.”

“But what exactly is the business of the Ministry of Agriculture with building police stations? And why should ₦2 billion be spent on rural markets when public primary health centers and schools across Akwa Ibom are in dilapidated conditions?” The group queried.

“This is complete misplacement of priority. It suggests that the Ministry of Agriculture has become a conduit for diverting public funds, with projects that neither align with its mandate nor address pressing citizen needs.

“For years, huge allocations have gone to Agriculture, yet farmers lack genuine support and rural communities remain underserved. Now, billions are being pushed into police stations under agricultural agencies.”

“We call on the residents of Akwa Ibom State to keep a close eye on these projects, track their implementation, and ensure value for money. Citizens’ vigilance is critical to stop waste and prevent another cycle of abandoned or substandard projects.”

“We also call on the ICPC and EFCC to urgently investigate the Ministry of Agriculture and the Federal Co-operative College, Ibadan, over these projects. Public funds must serve the people, not political interests ahead of 2027.”
