Accompanied by her spouse, Mr. Rafael Ocoró, Márquez was warmly welcomed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The reception committee included Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, alongside the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim. Other dignitaries present were Mariya Bunkure, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, and Zubaida Umar, Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), among other senior officials.
Objectives and Key Discussion Points
The Vice President’s visit is poised to reinforce the diplomatic rapport between Nigeria and Colombia, focusing on a broad spectrum of collaborative areas. Scheduled meetings with President Bola Tinubu and top government representatives will address shared priorities such as governance reforms, trade expansion, agricultural development, energy cooperation, educational exchange, and security enhancement.
This engagement is particularly timely as both nations seek to diversify their economies and strengthen South-South partnerships. For instance, Nigeria’s agricultural sector, which contributes approximately 24% to its GDP as of 2023, stands to benefit from Colombia’s expertise in sustainable farming practices.
Enhancing Bilateral Cooperation and Women’s Empowerment
Beyond economic and political collaboration, the visit underscores a commitment to cultural exchange and the empowerment of women. Vice President Márquez, known for her advocacy on gender equality and environmental justice, is expected to champion initiatives that support women’s leadership and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
This visit marks a pivotal moment in South-South cooperation, opening avenues for joint ventures in education, renewable energy projects, and cultural programs that celebrate the rich heritage of both countries.
